What To Pack In Your Child’s Crèche Bag
We explore the must-have items that should be contained in your little one’s bag for crèche...
By Julia Lamberti
You may feel overwhelmed trying to remember what to pack for your child’s day at crèche. However, asking for the crèche’s preferred packing list will clarify what is specifically required. Packing all items the night before will also help you to avoid morning mayhem on drop-off day. So, what essential items will keep your child comfortable while they are away from you?
A change of clothing
Packing a change of clothing for your child is important because they can get messy during the day. For babies, include a spare vest, extra baby grow, and socks and older kids should be supplied with an additional set of seasonal clothing and socks. It’s also wise to pack a spare T-shirt in case it gets warm or an extra cardigan or sweatshirt, for chillier weather.
Nappies, undies & wipes
If your child is still in nappies, a good idea is to send as many as required at the start of each week and pack baby wipes and bum cream daily. Kids who are already potty-trained should have an extra pair of undies and a plastic bag packed, in case of any unexpected toilet mishaps.
Bottles & liquids
You will need to provide baby bottles and breastmilk or pre-measured formula for infants and very young toddlers, depending on how long they will be at crèche. Older children will need a leak-proof water bottle filled with cool water.
Dummies & medication
If your baby uses a dummy, make sure that you pack an extra one each day, as these can easily be misplaced. Also, include any required medicines, creams, or ointments and ensure that their caregiver is given specific instructions on how to administer these - and formal permission to do so.
Sun protection
Children are particularly vulnerable to skin damage from the sizzling South African sun. Therefore, it is critical to pack a hat and a kid-friendly, high-SPF sunscreen for your child.
Bibs & burp cloths
You may also have to pack some bibs and burp cloths if you have a baby. These are important for teething or drooling and for use during mealtimes. A great tip is to pack them in a plastic bag so that it makes it easier to take soiled articles home.
A healthy snack
If your child eats solids and a meal isn’t provided by the crèche, ensure that you pack a healthy snack each day. Just avoid sweets and treats as these foods aren’t particularly nourishing and can cause jealousy. Some smart snack packing tips include:
Toys & bedding
Your child may have a favourite toy they would like to take to crèche but be sure to check whether it is ok to pack this as some facilities discourage these items from being brought to daycare. Also, if the crèche does not provide bedding for cribs or sleeping mats for naptime, pack a blanket and two sheets.
Labels & contact details
Ensure that every one of your child’s things is labelled clearly and that you use waterproof markers or labels for washable items. It is also wise to tuck a copy of your contact information, house address, and phone numbers in a side compartment of their bag.
